This month we’re highlighting the great work of our partners at the Compass Center, and specifically, how our corps member Liv Vermane is serving with them this year. To learn more about the Compass Center, visit their website at www.compassctr.org.
My name is Liv Vermane, and I work at the Compass Center!
Personally, I was apprehensive going into my placement with the Compass Center. Another year of working remotely seemed like a daunting task that I could not handle. Yet, Andrew and Christina thought it was the best placement for me, and I chose to trust them.
Each day, I have the opportunity to provide help to individuals who need shelter, food, or help escaping a domestically violent situation. The joy it brings me to bring help to these people is indescribable. Providing emotional support towards them is also an aspect of the job that I love.
Working at the Compass Center has been a joy in and of itself so far. My coworkers have done everything in their power to make working remotely a positive experience, and they have surely delivered. From dropping off supplies at my house to giving me a tour of the office to being in constant communication throughout the workday, they have shown up in every way possible.
Being a support system for Compass Center volunteers has probably been my favorite part of the job so far. Although I’m also brand new to the job, I have the privilege of guiding these volunteers through their tasks and answering any questions they may have. Sitting with them on zoom during their shifts, we laugh and talk like we’ve known each other for years.
The community at the Compass Center is beyond anything I could have hoped for. Working remotely, it can be difficult to stay in touch with coworkers. But the phrase “they’re only a phone call away” really rings true here. Erica has been the best supervisor, giving me all the tools I need to succeed and make the most of my experience at the Compass Center.
I am hopeful for the impact that I can make while at the Compass Center, and I am excited to see the impact that this position has on me as well. Here’s to a great year ahead!
