Alumni Spotlight — Elizabeth Brewington

July 1, 2019 · Aleta Payne

My name is Elizabeth Brewington (or Eliz the Woo Brew as I was called during my time at JSC). I served in Johnson Service Corp in 2017-2018 and lived in the Durham house (also known as the Durham Dames). My partner organization was the East Durham Children’s Initiative.  During my time at EDCI, I help run their Youth Leadership Club talking about food justice and assisting kids in learning how to be leaders in their community.

After my time in JSC, I stayed in Durham and began work with the NC Council of Churches. I serve as the Council’s Opioid Response Program Coordinator, (which as you can guess was a significant shift from talking to kids about eating healthy). My job now is going to speak to churches about the opioid crisis and ways they can get involved.

My time at JSC was a rollercoaster filled with lots of close friendships, struggle, and personal growth. My fellow Corp Members and my mentor are still to this day some of the first people I tell about the highs and the lows that I am going through in my life. Johnson Service Corp completely changed my life and introduced me to some of my closest friends.
