Reflections on Orientation, by Tamara

September 12, 2024

Hello! My name is Tamara Royster and I am one of the JSC fellows for this year! It has been nearly four weeks since we arrived and I think we’re all finally getting into a rhythm of sorts. Orientation was a lot for many of us and provided the other fellows and I with plenty to think about. The moments of rest were greatly appreciated!

Something I have not thought about as much as orientation was how in the world do you prepare for JSC? This may or may not be helpful, but honestly, I don’t think there was a way to prepare for all aspects of this program. Yes, there is the usual advice of remembering to pack deodorant, bug spray, and the usual essentials, but emotionally, mentally, and spiritually preparing yourself will likely be different for each person.

Each of us has a unique background and have had differing experiences in spiritual places. I entered into spaces that were a bit uncomfortable for me, especially as someone with social anxiety. I was moving into a home with five people who I had only met over zoom and text messages. There were also so many new names and faces at the housewarming and orientation that there was no way for me to remember them all, and that’s okay! One key thing that I had to do was remember to take time to recenter myself and do things that make me happy, whether that is exploring Durham on my own or gaming with friends outside of JSC.

The year has just begun and there will be many, many more times where I will meet a plethora of people and have to consider tough questions. Still I believe getting to take part in JSC will change me for the better and help me figure out the ideal version of myself I want to be!

During orientation, Tamara and The Fellows helped LEAP Durham prepare for the 2024 school year by replacing outdoor shade canopies, washing light covers, washing windows, and cleaning furniture.
