My name is Efiotu (Efi) Jagun, and I’m another one of this year’s JSC fellows. As someone who’s grown up in Durham, I’ve always appreciated how this city blends the old with the new, the quiet with the lively, and the artistic with the inclusive. Lately, I’ve found myself rediscovering parts of Durham that I never fully appreciated before, and I thought I’d share a few of my favorite experiences.
I have become a regular at the Cult of Queer Movement’s Queer Bachata Nights at Arcana. Even though I’ve lived here my whole life, I’m always amazed by how open and welcoming Durham’s queer scene is. The Bachata event was no exception—such a fun way to get out of my comfort zone and try something new. The crowd was a mix of familiar faces and newcomers, all of us dancing, laughing, and enjoying the vibrant energy of the night. If you’ve never been, it’s a must—no judgment, just good music and even better vibes.
I also spent some time at Eno River Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, a place I’ve been to off and on over the years. Their focus on inclusivity and social justice has always resonated with me, and the sense of community there is something I really value. Whether you’re looking for a spiritual connection or just a place to be yourself, this congregation has a way of making you feel seen and heard.
Of course, I couldn’t resist enrolling in one of Ninth Street Dance’s classes. As a local, I’ve seen this studio grow over the years, and it’s always felt like a second home. The classes here are open to everyone—whether you’re a total beginner or have been dancing for years—and the instructors create such a welcoming atmosphere. I always leave feeling more connected to my body and the creative energy of the city.
One of the most fun things I’ve done recently was attending a vogue workshop hosted by the LGBTQ Center of Durham. Voguing has been around for a while, but it’s been amazing to see it get so much love in Durham’s queer community. The workshop was a total blast—learning the moves, striking a pose, and embracing the fierce energy that comes with it was such a boost to my confidence. It’s a reminder of how Durham’s LGBTQ+ community always makes space for self-expression and creativity.
Finally, I spent a quiet afternoon at the NC Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill, which has always been one of my favorite spots to unwind. Even though it’s just a short drive from Durham, the gardens always feel like a world away. I love getting lost in the trails, taking in the lush landscapes, and just breathing in the peace and quiet. It’s the perfect escape from the bustle of everyday life.
Living in Durham, I sometimes forget just how much this city has to offer. Whether it’s dance, community, or nature, there’s always something new to discover—and even after all these years, I’m still finding new ways to connect with this place I call home.
