Our Partners at the East Durham Children’s Initiative

December 19, 2017

Each month, Johnson Service Corps will feature one of our Partner Organizations. For December, we are excited to share information about the East Durham Children’s Initiative.

______________________________________________________________________________________

The East Durham Children’s Initiative serves all children and families living in the EDCI Zone, a distressed, 120-block area in East Durham. Residents of the EDCI Zone face multiple challenges including a 55 percent adult poverty rate and high rates of crime, child maltreatment, and food insecurity. EDCI currently works with children from birth through seventh grade, and we have a number of bilingual staff to accommodate Spanish-speaking families.

EDCI provides children and families in the EDCI Zone with a pipeline of high-quality services including a low-cost preschool, out-of-school learning programs, in-school literacy interventions, parent and family support, health and nutrition services, and more. Our goal is for all children living within this zone to graduate from high school prepared for college and career.
